Ledger Wallet App: Managing Crypto With the Device as Signer
Ledger Wallet App: Managing Crypto With the Device as Signer
The Ledger wallet app is the companion app for a Ledger hardware wallet, and in practice it is Ledger Live. This guide explains what the app does day to day, how it works with your device to manage crypto assets, and which habits keep the setup safe. The page is informational and is not affiliated with Ledger.
What the Ledger Wallet App Does
Ledger Live is free and runs on a desktop computer (Windows, macOS, Linux) and on a phone (iOS, Android). It is the interface to a device that holds your keys, so the main jobs are reading information and preparing actions that the device then approves.
View your accounts and portfolio
You add accounts for the coins you hold and see balances and history in one place. This is read-only information taken from the blockchain, so seeing it does not require spending power.
Receive and send crypto
To receive, the app shows an address that you should compare with the one on your device screen. To send, you enter the details in the app, then check and confirm the address and amount on the device.
Buy, sell, swap and stake
The app also offers Buy, Sell, Swap and Earn. Earn is staking for some coins through providers, and rewards are not guaranteed and vary. Services offered this way have their own terms, which are shown when you use them.
Install coin apps onto the device
To hold a coin, you install its app onto your Ledger device through Ledger Live. These device apps are sometimes also called Ledger apps, which can be confusing next to the companion app itself.
How the App and Your Device Split the Work
The split between the app and the device is the reason this setup is considered safer than keeping keys in software.
The device signs, the app prepares
Private keys are generated and stored on the Secure Element of the device and stay offline. Ledger Live never holds them. Every outgoing transaction must be checked and physically confirmed on the device.
Why the device screen matters
A computer or phone can be infected, and malware can change what the app shows. The device screen is the place where you verify the real address and amount. If the two do not match, reject the transaction on the device.
What the app cannot do
The app cannot approve a transaction without the device, and it cannot reveal your keys. It also does not ask for your recovery phrase. Ledger Live will never ask you to enter your 24-word recovery phrase.
Which Devices Pair With the App
The devices currently supported are the Nano S Plus, the Nano X, Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax. The original Nano S is discontinued, although existing devices still work.
| Connection | Where it is used | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| USB cable | Desktop app | Required connection between a computer and the device |
| Bluetooth | Mobile app | Used with a Nano X and, where Ledger supports it, newer devices |
Bluetooth is not used between a desktop computer and the device. For the connection options of your model, check ledger.com.
Keeping Your Setup Safe
Most problems come from habits, not from the hardware. These are the habits that matter most.
Back up with the recovery phrase only
Your backup is the 24-word recovery phrase written down offline on paper or metal. There is no wallet data file that protects funds, and the app does not back anything up for you. Ledger Recover is an optional paid subscription for an encrypted, fragmented backup held by independent providers with identity verification. Details are on ledger.com.
Understand the login model
There is no Ledger Live account, username, server password, SMS or e-mail login, or 2FA. The app can have an optional password lock on that computer or phone, and the device has its own PIN. If you forget the password lock, reinstall Ledger Live and reconnect the device.
Get the app from official places only
Use ledger.com for desktop versions, the Apple App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android. An Android APK should only come from ledger.com. The macOS version is not in the Mac App Store. Ledger Live has no web version, and sites claiming to offer one are phishing.
Update firmware through the app
Firmware updates are installed through Ledger Live, in My Ledger. Follow the prompts on the screen and on the device and do not disconnect during the update.
Common Questions and Mistakes
These are the points where people most often go wrong.
Entering the recovery phrase to “fix” a problem
No error in the app is solved by typing your phrase into a computer, phone or website. Restoring a wallet happens on the device itself. Anyone who asks you for the phrase is trying to steal your funds.
Approving without reading the device screen
Pressing the confirm button without checking the address and amount defeats the main protection. Read both every time.
Trusting unexpected messages
Messages claiming that your Ledger needs an urgent update, verification or migration are a common scam. Go to ledger.com yourself and use the app’s own prompts instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the app hold my crypto?
No. Your crypto stays on the blockchain, and the keys that control it are on your device. The app is only the interface.
Can someone with my phone move my funds?
Not through the app alone. Sending requires the device, its PIN and physical confirmation on the device. Still, set a lock on your phone and keep your recovery phrase offline.
What if I lose my Ledger device?
You can restore your wallet on a new device by entering your 24-word recovery phrase on the device. Without the phrase, the funds cannot be recovered.
Can I use the app without a Ledger device?
The app is built for Ledger hardware wallets. Without a device there are no keys to sign with, and sending requires the device.
Is the app available as a website?
No. There is no web, browser or online version, and no web login.
Is staking through Earn guaranteed?
No. Staking is available for some coins through providers. Rewards are not guaranteed and can change.
